The 5 Stages Of Ripeness

How to sell Avocados From Mexico while the getting’s good. 

STAGE 1

Very hard fruit, usually green or sometimes black. Ripeness in about 7 days at 25 lbs. pressure.

STAGE 2

Pre-conditioned fruit ripens in 3–5 days at room temperature (15–25 lbs. pressure).

STAGE 3

Breaking fruit has slight give and ripens in –3 days at room temp (10–15 lbs. pressure)

STAGE 4

Firm, slightly ripe fruit yields gently, ideal for slicing. Ripens fully in 1 day at room temp (5–10 lbs. pressure)

STAGE 5

Ripe fruit yields easily—use same day or refrigerate for 3–5 days (5lbs. or less)

TIP:

Color is not always the best indicator of ripeness. Always wash avocados before cutting into them.

Receiving & Handling Best Practices

Our Avocados From Mexico like to be in good hands. Here’s how to keep ’em fresh from truck to shelf to cart.

  • Unpack Immediately
    Upon product’s arrival remove shroud immediately.
  • Avoid Pressure Damage
    Remove any items stacked directly above the product.
  • Handle With Care
    Handle with extreme care — avocados bruise very easily.
  • Proper Cold Storage
    Keep backstock Avocados From Mexico refrigerated at 40°F, never lower than 38°F.
  • Controlled Ripening
    For further ripening, hold Avocados From Mexico at 60°F to 65°F, never exceeding 68°F, and keep them rotated.

 

Put on a Good Display

-Handle With Care: Do not "dump" fruit when replenishing displays.
-Daily Product Rotation: Sweep display for rotation - hard fruit on the bottom, ripe fruit on top.
-Display Placement: Display Avocados From Mexico with produce standards, ideally next to tomatoes or complementary items.
-Feature Display Setup: Use display standards for Avocados From Mexico promos and cross-merchandise with tomatoes or guacamole ingredients.
-Secondary Display: Place secondary Avocados From Mexico displays at the end of produce tables, using avocado boxes.
Table Merchandising:
Use original RPC container and rotate stock.
POD Merchandising:
Remove fruit from container and utilize tray merchandising — no higher than two layers.
