How to Make Air-Fried Avocado Frites (And 3 New Ways to Serve Them)

Foodies around the world are talking: Air fryers are hot right now. Of course, we wanted to get in on the action, so we’re sharing our very own recipe for air-fried avocado frites (also known as avocado fries). These golden-brown morsels are delicious appetizers at any event — and they’re made even more scrumptious when paired with our favorite dipping sauces!

 

Here’s our air-fried avocado frites recipe, plus some unique ways to boost the flavor with seasoning, five delicious dip recipes, and how to serve them in tacos, salads, and more.

 

THE SECRET’S IN THE SLICE

Before you dive into the recipe, you’ll need to know the best way to slice an avocado. For these air-fried avocado fries, you’ll want to make sure each slice is no less than 1/4-inch thick — any thinner and they might dry out in the fryer. Thick-cut avocado frites, of course, are welcome.

 

 

Air-Fried Avocado Frites Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 Avocados From Mexico, sliced lengthwise
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 c. panko breadcrumbs
  • Nonstick cooking spray as needed

 

Instructions:

  1. Slice your Avocados From Mexico lengthwise.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Separate all-purpose flour and panko breadcrumbs into two bowls. (See the next section for some spice mixes to boost your breadcrumb game.)
  4. Dredge each avocado slice in flour, shaking off the excess. Dip the floured avocado slice into the egg mixture, then dredge in the panko breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to adhere. Repeat with all slices.
  5. Place the avocado wedges into the air fryer’s basket and cook at 400°F for 9 to 11 minutes. Turn them over halfway through cooking. Let cool before eating.

 

FEEL GOOD ABOUT AIR FRYING AVOCADO

Air frying is a popular trend for a reason. The main draw is that you can fry your food without using oil. That means you can reduce the amount of unhealthy fats you might intake with traditional, deep-fried appetizers. So, air-fried avocado frites are doubly good: Avocados are a heart-healthy fruit! They provide naturally good fats, and one serving (50 g) of avocado is naturally cholesterol-, sugar-, and sodium-free. Eat good, feel good (plus it tastes good)!

 

Upgrade Your Avocado Frite Breading

Get freaky with your frites by adding a dash of razzle-dazzle to the breading. Grab one of these flavor mixes and add it to your bowl of panko breadcrumbs (Step 3 in the instructions above).

  • 🌿 Italian Zest: Give your avocado frites an herby zing by adding 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp. dried parsley, and 1/4 tsp. garlic powder to your breading mix.
  • 🥵 Flaming Frites: Crank up the heat with this spicy pepper frite breading: Add 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper, 1/2 tsp. chili powder, and 1/4 tsp. chipotle powder.
  • 🥩 Steakhouse Blend: The salty seasoning of a steakhouse porter in every bite. All you need is to add 1/2 tsp. onion powder, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, 1/3 tsp. dried rosemary, and 1/3 tsp. dried thyme to your breading.


Not extreme enough for you?
We’ve got more. Skip the panko breadcrumbs altogether and use crumbled potato chips or corn chips for your breading. Regular flavors will do just fine to give your avocado a salty crust, but feel free to amp up things with your favorite brands of cool ranch, lime-chile powder, or nacho cheese chips. Go hard or go home.
