Magic of Michoacan

There are few places on earth where avocados
grow all year long, and one place is Mexico.

To be more precise, that place is the Mexican state of Michoacán.

To understand our roots, one must understand that Mexico is where the avocado tree originated more than 10,000 years ago. Mexico’s rich volcanic soil, abundant sunshine, and timely rainfall provide the perfect microclimate for producing great tasting, creamy avocados that are always in season.

In the state of Michoacán, you can find more than 19,360 avocado orchards and a blooming season that lasts the entire year, making it the only place on earth where avocados can bloom four times a year.

Each bloom cycle has a name

and corresponds to the time of year when avocados can be harvested:

Avocados are available in the orchards located below 2,000 meters in June and everywhere in the state from July through September.

It’s during this bloom when the majority of avocados are produced. The crop is available in lower area orchards (1,100 to 1,600 meters) in September, in orchards below 2,100 meters in October, and in most all of the orchards in the state from November through February.

Avocados are available in orchards located below 1,600 meters from July to August, in orchards from 1,600 to 2,100 meters in August and September, and in orchards above 2,100 meters during October.

This means “bloom from March/spring.” Avocados are available in orchards below 1,900 meters in March, from orchards 1,600 to 2,000 meters in April, from 2,000 to 2,300 meters in May, and from orchards at 2,300 to 2,500 meters in June.

These Mexican avocados grow among more than 100 volcanoes, in the center of the feared Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, which is the reason why the avocado industry has bloomed in the region, and why Michoacán is a dream land in which to grow avocados.

The love, care, and dedication to the land and harvest of avocados are what make Michoacán one of the most beautiful and respected places in the world, and deserving of the name Avocadoland.
